BISHOP WILLIE B. DUGAN

Personal Motto: “If you don’t want to love me, just let me love you.”

FOUNDER OF CHRISTIAN UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH

Bishop Willie B. Dugan was a man who believed that wisdom holds the key to understanding. Like King Solomon, he asked God for an understanding heart—and he lived that prayer daily. Alongside his devoted wife of 48 years, First Lady Katherine C. Dugan, he faithfully answered the call of God, sacrificing comfort and security to walk in obedience to their Heavenly Father.

More than 28 years ago, Bishop Dugan stepped out on faith. Once an 18-wheeler truck driver with dreams and opportunities of his own, he chose instead to follow the voice of the Lord. With courage and conviction, he helped establish the first African American church in Bellwood, Illinois—Christian Unity Baptist Church—transforming what once was an old laundromat into a place filled with purpose, praise, and the presence of God. Yes, it went from washing clothes to washing souls!

Through his pastoral leadership, Bishop Dugan took what was old and gave it new life, building not just a church, but a spiritual home. Like Abraham, he trusted God’s promise, looking out over the land and believing in what would be. Today, that vision stands as a testament to his faith—the very ground where Christian Unity Baptist Church now thrives.

Bishop Dugan served with compassion and unwavering dedication. He baptized countless souls, united couples in holy matrimony, and christened children into the family of faith. He faithfully preached and taught the Word of God, touching lives with wisdom, humility, and love. Beyond the pulpit, he was a devoted family man—a loving father to his five daughters, a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandfather to four. Even in moments of deep personal loss, including the passing of his beloved wife, he stood firm in his faith, remembering that “the joy of the Lord is my strength.”

A true pillar of the community, Bishop Dugan also served as a Maywood Park Commissioner and contributed to various local efforts that uplifted families and strengthened neighborhoods. From supporting youth in community parks to participating in outreach and advisory groups, he remained committed to making a lasting difference. Known affectionately as an “F.B.I.—Forever Being an Inspiration,” his impact reached far beyond the church walls. As a teacher, preacher, leader, and servant, Bishop Willie B. Dugan truly embodied his motto. He loved unconditionally, served faithfully, and inspired all who had the privilege of knowing him.
